Tonight (Thursday Nov 30) at 8pm in the Park House Hotel, Galway West TD Catherine Connolly, along with businessman Brendan Holland and other invited guests will host a public meeting to discuss public transport as the most viable solution to Galway’s traffic problems, and in particular the provision of a light rail system.

Across Europe, light rail systems have been rolled out across cities of similar size and population to Galway, and are working successfully, meaning there is no longer any reason to oppose such a public transport system being constructed here.

Following the formation of the Croagh Patrick stakeholders group late last year which includes all the mountains stakeholders such as the church, Murrisk community, Mayo County Council, South West Mayo Development Company, Mayo Mountain Rescue, Croagh Patrick Archaeological Society, and the tourism and adventure sectors, the group has launched a a new map/information leaflet and signage for Croagh Patrick. The map is the first time that the route is clearly marked out on one ordnance survey sheet and will greatly assist users in navigating the route.

An attempt to revive support for a light rail system for Galway will come before the next Galway City Council meeting, with a demand for a delegation from City Hall to visit towns in France to observe how light rail is operating there.

If 10,000 more housing units are built per year, an additional 25,000 people will be employed in the construction sector, according to the Construction Industry Federation [CIF].
